The Roraima Fund
Social and other problems caused by unemployment especially amongst young people are prevalent in Guyanese village life. The situation is often compounded by a lack of economically useful skills. A resident of Auchlyne, Corentyne applied to and received from TRF funding to run vocational training classes in cake and pastry making skills.
The first group of classes started in October 2011 and were well attended by villagers across the age spectrum who are enthusiastic and committed. The course included oven skills, recipes and ingredients and food hygiene. Snacks from the classes would often be donated to and shared with residents of a nearby children’s orphanage on Sunday afternoons.
The organiser and teacher has continued with a second group of classes and later hopes to run a similar vocational training programme in Computer Studies in the same village.
TRF has been impressed by the initiative shown by the Project Leader. Her efforts have brought activity with economic potential to the village and generated enthusiasm and hope amongst villagers.
TRF funded a community minded city worker who organised and taught vocational cake and pastry making skills to her fellow villagers
