The Roraima Fund
The Minister of Amerindian Affairs in her initial trip to Rupununi communities stated “many villages do not take advantage of the opportunities that are given to them because they do not submit written proposals for the funding of development projects”.
An experienced community leader from Region 9 applied to The Roraima Fund for a grant to jump-start indigenous controlled, cultural, social and economic development in 3 Makushi communities in the southern Rupununi by conducting training in basic project management capacity building inclusive of project identification and proposal writing.
Similar training in the North Rupununi in 2009 has led to more than 17 community projects like Eco-lodge development, Livestock rearing etc.
being funded by the government and external agencies.
Two day training workshops were held in each of the 3 communities of Moco Moco, Nappi and Parishara during the Summer of 2011 for 30 participants. There was good local support for the project from the Toshaos of the villages. More training will take place soon.
The raised profile of the project leader likely contributed to his election to the Regional Parliament in the National and Regional Elections of Nov. 2011.
We funded training in project management and proposal writing for 3 Makushi communities in Region 9.
