The Youth Empowerment Network (YEN) has been running Summer Camps for under-privileged children for the past two years.
YEN is a collaboration between a Guyanese organisation and the United Nations Development Project -Enhanced Public Trust Security and Inclusions Project (EPTSI). It caters to youth from communities within Guyana and seeks to help them develop an awareness of themselves and their talents while fostering a connection to their peers and the larger community. It also strives to promote a vision of the world in which they would like to see themselves.
The 2011 Summer Camp for 35 young people was run for 9 days in Linden by 4 coordinators from the YEN and 5 community volunteers. Participants were drawn from the government Drop-In-Centre and from other areas of south Georgetown. There were practical activities on Bio-diversity, Community Action, Conflict Resolution, Film Making and Health. The young participants also organised a Bonfire night and held an end-of-course costume, concert.
Throughout the classes the youth were encouraged to develop their capacity to think creatively and critically. It it hoped this will assist them in developing their sense of freedom and power, and their ability to positively impact their own lives and initiate change within Guyana as a whole.
