The Railway View literacy programme (railwayviewproject ) runs remedial literacy classes for disadvantaged children from a former squatters’ community on West Coast Demerara. It is supported by a free community-based library and a family empowerment program. All of these activities are based within the community and supported by contributions from within the community and external funding. The programme is managed by the Railway View Parent Committee with advice and support from a dedicated PhD student / social entrepreneur from Georgetown.
TRF funded two components of its work: (i) introducing computer technology into its free remedial classes for children as well as, (ii) providing grants for women from poor households to start income generating activities that would enhance their abilities to provide for their children.
The Literacy class has gone on to win an award from the Rotary Club of Guyana and continues to build the ways in which it supports both children and parents in the Community. The parents have formed a small snack food business which has recently started operations with funding from TRF.
TRF have been particularly encouraged by the multi-ethnic, aspirational and multi-facetted nature of this project that seeks to address both the symptoms and causes of poor educational prospects.
TRF funded the purchase of computers and reading programs for a vibrant remedial literacy program
